Conference Report
The annual Conference of the Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS), Indian Geotechnical Conference 2012 (IGC-2012) is organized jointly by IGS Delhi Chapter and Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) during December 13-15, 2012 at IIT Delhi. The brief report of the Conference is given below:

The Conference was inaugurated by the Chief Guest; Shri. A. P. Mishra, Member Engineering, Railway Board on December 13, 2012, morning. Inaugurating the Conference, Shri. Mishra narrated the geotechnical challenges faced by many major infrastructure projects and called for concerted effort of the geotechnical community.

The Technical Exhibition was inaugurated by Prof. S. N. Singh, Deputy Director, IIT Delhi. 29 Companies participated in the exhibition occupying 44 stalls.

The total number of participants of the Conference is around 700, including 90 participants from Organizing Committee and Student volunteers.

At every Annual Conference of the Society, an eminent geotechnical engineer is invited to deliver the prestigious IGS Annual Lecture. 34th IGS Annual Lecture was presented by Prof. B. R. Srinivasa Murthy, former Professor at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore on “Case Studies in Geotechnical Engineering Constructions”. He highlighted the deficiencies in investigation, design and construction that affect the safety of the structures, and presented some cost effective and innovative solutions.

5 Plenary Sessions were held in which 14 eminent engineers presented keynote lectures on various important topics on recent developments in geotechnical engineering. The topics included Centrifuge Modelling, Deep Foundations in Problematic Soil, Ground Improvement, Grouting of Dams, Ground Vibration, Jointed Rock Mass, Pile Foundation, Strength Parameter Prediction for Large Structures, Numerical Modelling, Disaster Management, Seismic Dilatometer, Design of Reinforced Soil Wall, Delhi Metro Construction, and Underground Caverns.

Out of 274 technical papers published in two volumes of the Conference Proceedings, 147 papers were presented in 19 Technical Sessions covering 11 sub-themes of the Conference. Corporate Presentations were made by 7 Companies on December 14, 2012. In addition to the densely packed technical information, the delegates also received treat for the eyes and ears yesterday, through two classical performances – Santoor Recital by Pt. Abhay Rustum Sopori, and Bharatanatyam Performance by Mrs. Jayalakshmi Eshwar and Abhinaya Dance Group.

The programme for Accompanying Persons included visit to some places of historic importance, shopping areas and religious places. There were about 30 registered delegates participated in these programmes.

Pre-Conference Workshop
An Indo-Korean Workshop was held on December 12, 2012 on “Geotechnology for Urban Environment” as a pre-Conference activity. This Workshop was the outcome of the MoU between Indian Geotechnical Society and Korean Geotechnical Society. This Workshop is the first joint event by both the Societies. 4 Korean experts and 7 Indian experts presented lectures on various topics focussing geotechnology for urban environment. The workshop was successful with participation of 80 delegates, including student delegates and 5 Korean delegates.

Post-Conference Workshop
A post Conference International Workshop on “Seismic Requalification of Geotechnical Structures” was held on December 17, 2012, in which about 50 delegates had participated. This event is jointly organised by IIT Guwahati and IGS in association with IIT Delhi. This workshop was organized as a part of UKIERI project. There were 14 invited lectures delivered by eminent experts from both India and UK in the area of earthquake geotechnical engineering. The workshop had fruitful deliberations by the participants and speakers. As an outcome of the workshop, a guideline for assessing the quality of existing geotechnical structures and designing the new geotechnical structures to withstand the future earthquakes, is expected to be published.
